Wing
Chun is a style of Chinese kung fu known as one of the most
effective fighting systems ever developed. Created by a nun
from the Shaolin Temple, the Wing Chun system was designed
to enable a smaller, weaker person to destroy a larger, stronger
opponent within a few seconds. In contrast to karate, tae
kwon do, or many other popular styles that rely on brute strength
and large movements to battle an opponent, Wing Chun uses
precision and efficiency to quickly defeat an attacker with
the least amount of motion and effort.
Wing Chun’s martial philosophy can be described in
two words: simplicity and efficiency. Movement is small and
extremely efficient, utilizing subtle shifts of the body to
deflect, evade, and counterstrike all in one motion. Kicks
are low, swift, and usually simultaneous with the hand techniques.
Rather than “blocking” an attack by knocking it
out of the way with muscular strength, attacks are parried
by redirecting them off course, requiring a minimum of motion
and strength. Instead of pulling back or “winding up”
to strike, attacks are quick and direct, and power is generated
over short distances (Wing Chun’s famous “one-inch
punch” is a demonstration of this principle). Contact
is maintained with the opponent at all times, as the Wing
Chun student is very comfortable and effective fighting at
close range.
Due to the simplicity of Wing Chun, it can be used effectively
by beginning students. At its most advanced, this simplicity
is also what makes Wing Chun such a devastatingly efficient
style. |
